Unless Arsenal have some great last minute deals up their sleeves, all signs point towards one of the most miserable ends to a transfer window in Arsène Wenger’s time at the club.
Already struggling in the league, the Frenchman could still potentially see Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leave the club, while recuperating Raheem Sterling, as well as waving goodbye to a centre-back he signed just last year for over €40m.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, whose claims about Shkodran Mustafi leaving leaving were growing in confidence on Monday, the German defender wants to return to Italy, where he spent two years at Sampdoria, and the Gunners are ‘ready to do without him’.
Why remains a huge mystery, considering Wenger is already struggling with a leaky defence and playing Nacho Monreal at centre-back, but that’s what the Italian newspaper is reporting.
Of course, the only way Inter can afford this move is if they do it via a loan with a view to buy next year.
Will Arsenal go for that, or will they want the money up front to be able to find a replacement as soon as possible?
Logic isn’t prevailing at the Emirates, it seems.
