In a football landscape now dominated by money, transfers are everything and it seemsdins de Bordeaux have got them right at least twice, thanks to Southampton.
That’s according to Foot Mercato, relayed information from Sud-Ouest, who say the French side have two previous deals with Southampton to thank for saving the club.
They say that Bordeaux ‘can once again thank’ Sékou Mara, with the Southampton man saving his club yet again.
During the French side’s descent into league 2, the 22-year-old was transferred to the Saints for €11.5m, a deal that allowed Bordeaux to rebalance their finances and not be demoted even further.
Two years later they’ve been saved by the player again, this time thanks to his transfer from Southampton to Strasbourg.
He joined the latter in a €12m deal this summer and that brought €300,000 to Bordeaux thanks to FIFA’s solidarity compensation scheme.
That money will now help the French side pay the operating costs of Matmut Atlantique, their stadium, taking a major financial burden off of the club.
So, while Mara’s move to Southampton may not have worked out for him or them, Bordeaux have been able to celebrate twice. First when he joined the Saints, and then again when he left them.
