It’s now August 29th and Thomas Vermalen remains a Barcelona player.

Even the Catalan press have pretty much given up hope of him leaving, despite spending the summer linking Premier League clubs.

Three weeks ago it was claimed by Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo that Everton had even held talks about signing the player, with the Toffees, and particularly Ronald Koeman, presented as being very keen.

West Brom are another club repeatedly linked and perhaps the recent doubts over Jonny Evans’ future could convince Tony Pulis to consider the Vermaelen option, but that’s grasping at straws.

Over in Belgium there’s still some hope.

Het Nieuwsblad say Everton and West Brom have interest, and Vermaelen is one of a number of Belgian internationals the newspaper believe could move.

At this stage of the window, the injury cursed defender would be fortunate with a move to either Everton or West Brom, but whilst it doesn’t look in the works right now, stranger things have happened.
