The Spanish media were excited when Rafael Benitez moved to Newcastle United, clearly thrilled when the manager won promotion back to the Premier League, and continue to be happy as Benitez looks towards Spanish recruitment.

If Joselu was anything other than Spanish, then the coverage of the player’s impending move to Newcastle from Stoke City may not be so positive, with the club accused of not backing their manager enough.

After struggling at Stoke, Joselu moved to Deportivo La Coruna on loan, and many of the club’s fans didn’t want him from day one. That was down to the player’s Celta Vigo past, and Joselu wasn’t able to do anything on the pitch to change things much.

Marca say the 27 year old’s move to Newcastle United could be completed today, and they point out that would mean five Spaniards under the control of Benitez at Newcastle United.

Benitez and Newcastle fans would surely have preferred the fifth to be Lucas Perez, but the Arsenal player hasn’t at any point seemed close to St James’ Park, despite the manager wanting him.

The extra Spanish flavour at Newcastle means Marca and others will be keeping a very close eye on events this season, and they’ll hope it’s all positive.

A good first half of the campaign would make further Spanish recruitment easier in January.
