A year ago, Barcelona and Tottenham were battling to sign Lucas Bergvall and now he’s ‘stuck’ at Spurs.
That’s according to Sport, who cover ‘the Swedish jewel’ today and can’t hide their satisfaction at his apparent struggles at Tottenham.
Bergvall has found himself out of favour under Ange Postecoglou in the last few weeks, failing to pick up any minutes in their last five Premier League games and receiving plenty of criticism after the defeat to Galatasaray in the Europa League.
Postecoglou himself was critical after the game, insisting the 18-year-old had plenty left to learn if he was to be the star many expect him to be.
This was picked up in Sweden, where there is a growing feeling that the Tottenham man simply doesn’t rate the youngster.
They say that Bergvall is ‘stuck’ at Tottenham after he chose them ‘against the odds’ and ‘surprised’ everyone at the Camp Nou with the decision given he had visited the club and spoken to their representatives.
Tottenham won out with a proposal offering better economic options and a ‘more attractive sporting plan’ as they guaranteed him a first-team place. There was also the advantage of Bergvall speaking English.
Everything started positively but Bergvall is ‘barely getting minutes’ at this moment in time and has found himself criticised by fans and Postecoglou.
While the player himself has acknowledged a need to improve and seemingly remains hopeful, Sport are certainly relishing his troubles.
Their look at the situation is more than likely pleasure at seeing him not become an instant star in London, particularly while their current first team is thriving and full of young talent.
