Former Cagliari defender Francois Modesto has spoken about his appreciation for Leeds United co-owner Massimo Cellino. Modesto joined the Sardinian club after Cellino brought him over to Italy from Bastia.
The 38-year-old said Cellino is criticised in the Italian media, but he believes he was lucky to meet him. Modesto said the Leeds United owner helped him to develop as a player, along with the coaches he played under at Cagliari.
“I then had the honour of being coached by great coaches like Tabarez, Ventura, Reja and Ulivieri, but I was also lucky enough to meet a president like Cellino. I know that in Italy some do not appreciate him, but I know he helped me a lot,” said the Frenchman on the Leeds United chief.
Cellino would eventually sell the Sardinian club when he purchased Leeds United, but not without first fleeing to Miami to protect himself from disgruntled Cagliari fans.
Since Cellino arrived at Leeds United he’s faced the wrath of the Elland Road faithful, which resulted in protests against him last season. The Italian now only owns a 50% stake in Leeds United, and has been repeatedly linked to a takeover at Brescia.
