Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario could be a Tottenham player by Monday ‘barring any last-minute surprises’.

That’s according to Il Tirreno, who say the Italian side are on the verge of completing a club record departure by selling the goalkeeper to Spurs.

The newspaper reports that the goalkeeper’s move to Tottenham ‘is in the home straight’ and he should be joining Ange Postecoglou’s side in a €20m deal that could rise to €25m.

The deal has been edging closer to completion this week and a ‘lunge’ from Tottenham on Thursday proved to be ‘decisive’ in the matter.

The two clubs now have an agreement in place on the transfer and medical examinations have already been scheduled for this weekend. Monday could then see ‘the official change of shirt’.

Vicario will join Tottenham on a five-year deal until 2028 and take the starting spot from Hugo Lloris, who is set to bid farewell to the club after 11 years.

The Italian goalkeeper had been targeted by big sides in Serie A but it is Tottenham who have moved and he now has the opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League.

The move is set to be beneficial to Empoli, who are set to secure a record transfer fee for a player, surpassing the €17m departure of Ismael Bennacer in August 2019, but also Cagliari, who hold a 10% resale clause on their former player.
