Ahead of the new season, an article from L’Equipe in France suggested that Queens Park Rangers were aiming for an ambitious signing, as they targeted Paris Saint-Germain forward Jean-Kévin Augustin.
The now 19-year-old was of interest to quite a lot of sides, including Tottenham and RB Salzburg, and QPR were thrown in there, with the Championship side having already enquired about a potential purchase.
Augustin saw players like Hatem Ben Arfa and Jesé in the French capital, and there were rumours an exit towards the end of the summer could be on the cards, as the forward wanted time on the pitch.
With both the new arrivals flopping, the youngster did act as backup to Edinson Cavani, but a disagreement in January over a loan move has now seen him return to the reserves, which should be good news for Ian Holloway, right?
Wrong.
L’Equipe on Thursday report that Borussia Dortmund, who entered the fray back in December, have already reached an agreement with the player for a move in the summer, needing only approval from Paris Saint-Germain (which could prove difficult) to get a transfer done.
Seeing Ousmane Dembélé thrive in Germany certainly will have played a part in Augustin’s decision, and even guaranteed game time at Loftus Road is unlikely to change his mind.
It seemed like such a good idea at the time, back in August, but it appears this target is very quickly slipping away from Queens Park Rangers.
