The Sevilla defender was a very prominent target for the Blues, who even went as far as making an offer for the Frenchman, only for the La Liga side to turn it down, as it was deemed insufficient.
This affected the player a bit, who clearly liked the idea of heading to the Premier League, but he eventually regrouped and remains one of the stars in Spain.
Now, Chelsea are currently under a version of a transfer ban, unable to sell or buy players following sanctions placed on their owner Roman Abramovich, but that could all change if they are sold.
That’s still an ongoing process, with around six groups said to have placed a bid for the club in time, and the idea would be to get it all sorted before the summer, so that the squad can be improved and changed as needed.
That’s because, according to Sport, Sevilla are ‘doomed to sell’ this summer, as they have a ‘deficit of €30m in the budget after not getting past the round of last 16 in the Europa League’.
Once the maths are done, Jules Koundé ‘is presented as the most interesting player to balance the budget or mitigate the impact’, and Chelsea’s interest in him last summer is put forward.
Not only that, but it’s said ‘there will be no shortage of proposals’ this time around either.
First, however, Chelsea need to sort out their issues before trying to take advantage of Sevilla’s.
