Over the past week, Portuguese sport newspapers have been speaking about a new Manchester United offer for Bruno Fernandes.
It’s important to note, once again, that in Portugal there seems to be a real hang-up over the status of an offer, and it isn’t taken entirely seriously until it’s in writing.
On Friday, A Bola reported United had been trying various solutions to please Sporting.
One of those was a potential €55m guaranteed offer, with an additional €10m in achievable bonuses.
There was also talk of Miguel Pinho, Bruno’s agent, managing to get more money out of the English club.
Saturday’s O Jogo reported that despite Manchester United saying they’d increase their first €50m offer, that hadn’t happened yet… officially at least.
Sunday’s A Bola reports a new proposal has now been made. It stands at €55m plus €5m in ‘objectives’ and a further €10m in bonuses. Sporting are said to believe that amounts to €60m realistically.
Record echo that and say there was a meeting on Saturday in Lisbon between Frederico Varandas, Sporting’s president, and an official from United.
They agree the guaranteed amount has been raised to €55m, but point out Sporting are looking for a headline figure of €70m so the bonuses, and structure of them, are important.
After the Premier League club reactivated their efforts, the ball is now back with the Liga NOS side.
It’s unknown for them whether Bruno will play on Monday against Maritimo.
O Jogo report events in the ‘last few hours’ have been ‘decisive’ with Manchester United making a new offer of €55m plus €15m in bonuses.
They believe an ‘important step’ has been taken, and that despite Varandas wanting €60m guaranteed there’s confidence at both clubs, and around the player, that things can now progress.
Still, this proposal isn’t yet ‘official’ and work needs to be done ‘in the next few days’ to get the move over the line.
O Jogo state the Maritimo match could be Bruno Fernandes’ latest farewell game, and, like Record, they say the ball is now with Sporting… so the next move is down to them.
