This morning, there had been some expectation in Portugal for the national team call up. Manager Fernando Santos has announced the list of players who will be facing Luxembourg and Ukraine for the Euro Qualifiers.
One of the biggest doubts was Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Diogo Jota, who’s missing tonight’s Europa League clash against Besiktas due to a foot injury.
And it turns out that Jota was really left out of the squad, although Fernando Santos did not make clear why, and apparently wasn’t asked about it either.
The player had been called up by Portugal for six games this year, although he never left the bench.
If the injury is really the reason for his absence, then Jota is likely also missing the Premier League game against Manchester City at the weekend.
Portugal are playing Luxembourg on October 11th and Ukraine three days later. With both games being a week from now, it looks like Jota needs some time to recover.
After that, Wolves are back in action for the game against Southampton on October 19th.
