Villarreal president Fernando Roig has suggested he has no intention of selling Alex Baena this summer, even if Aston Villa and Unai Emery insist on signing him.
The Villarreal president has been speaking to AS as he celebrated 27 years as the club’s largest shareholder.
He was asked various questions about the past and the future of the Spanish side, which inevitably meant questions on potential transfers.
The biggest rumour around the club is currently focused on Alex Baena, who is the current undoubted star of the side and thus, being linked with a move away.
Several reports have made it clear that Aston Villa are keen on reuniting him with Unai Emery, who handed him is debut for Villarreal in the Europa League and Conference League during his time at the club.
He’s reportedly a big fan of the 22-year-old and would love to work with him at Aston Villa, where they’re planning a big summer to strengthen their squad for the Champions League.
Roig was asked directly about that interest from Emery, and it seems he has no intention of letting a transfer to Aston Villa, or anywhere else, take place.
“Baena is a player for Villarreal in the coming years, we are betting heavily on Baena, I think that in the coming seasons he will still grow and be a better player. Baena is a great player,” he said.
“We do not talk about hypotheses or the future, we are not in that right now. The important thing is that Baena is a player who has grown a lot at Villarreal, and my intention is for him to continue growing here.
“I don’t like to talk about hypotheses. Although I always say that there are three parts, and that if all three parts agree, it can always be closed. But right now, it is not an issue we are working on.”
