Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan believes his old club should be taking this season’s EFL Cup seriously. The Championship side play Blackburn Rovers tonight, and will be confident getting of a result after their 2-1 victory over Own Coyle’s men last week.
Speaking to the YEP, Whelan believes the Leeds United players should be thinking about Wembley now they’ve got to this stage in the competition. The Elland Road favourite said if they can get to the final then it’s a something special for the player and fans with also the prospect of getting into the Europa League.
“When you get that close and you get past Blackburn you can think: ‘do you know what, we are only two or three games off the final here and going to Wembley.’
“That should be something that excites the players and the club – that it could be a special season and it could be a day out. You just never know in cup competitions – you might end up in Europe,” said Whelan on Leeds United’s chances.
Leeds United meet Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road tonight coming off the back of two victories in the league. The West Yorkshire side got the season off to a shaky start, but Saturdays’ 2-0 win at Cardiff City has given Garry Monk’s side a lift.
