Liverpool join Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and other clubs in the race to sign Matthijs de Ligt, according to building reports.

Catalan newspaper Sport claims the aforementioned clubs are ‘behind’ the Netherlands international.

The Ajax captain has an option to join the Champions League winners, Thomas Tuchel’s side and the Blaugrana, but his agent Mino Raiola only considers the former two.

It’s claimed the offer made by Ernesto Valverde’s side does not meet the requirements of the teenager’s representative.

Therefore, Raiola sees the defender joining the Merseyside club or the Ligue 1 winners in the summer transfer window.

In addition to this, the European champions are Barcelona’s ‘biggest competitor’ in the race to sign the Dutchman.

De Ligt is currently with the national team, preparing for the upcoming UEFA Nations League clash against England and is expected to make a decision on his future next week, after the tournament in Portugal.

The player is aware of interest from several clubs in securing his services and has accepted to be auctioned in order to get the best deal.

If De Ligt joins Liverpool, he would play alongside his compatriot Virgil van Dijk and the duo could form the best centre-back partnership in Europe.

That’s how these claims first started, and it could be a case of genuine interest, or Liverpool’s latest Champions League triumph giving the rumour a boost.

Manchester United are not considered seriously by Sport due to their lack of top level European competition next season.
