Sunderland midfielder Didier Ndong has reportedly been offered to Portuguese giants Benfica.

According to newspaper Record today, the 24-year-old was proposed to the Eagles by agent César Boaventura.

But the Lisbon side are not very interested in signing the player right now, and turned down the opportunity. Record claims that a deal could have been found for a little more than €5m.

Sunderland would be looking to offload the player due to his wages. With a tight budget after relegation to League One, the Black Cats need to clean their payroll a little bit.

Ndong signed for Sunderland on a €20m deal from Lorient back in 2016. He spent the second part of the last season on loan at Watford, and apparently won’t be returning to play for the Black Cats again.

But with this rejection from Benfica, it seems that Ndong will have to keep working to find some other club. And there are just a few days left in the transfer window for him to do that.
