Over the past few weeks, multiple reports coming out of Italy have talked about Inter Milan planning to bring in a new midfielder in the mid-season transfer window.
Manchester United’s Nemanja Matić is one of the names discussed, but it looks like the Nerazzurri are also looking at another position.
According to Sky Italia, the Serie A side have turned their attention towards Tottenham Hotspur’s Jan Vertonghen as they ‘like’ the central defender.
The Belgium international’s current deal at the north London club runs down in 2020 and he’ll turn 33 years of age next April.
As of now, there has been no clarity if the centre-back will continue with Spurs beyond his season. If the Champions League runners-up decide against offering the player a new deal, then Vertonghen can leave the English side as a free agent next summer.
It’s claimed Antonio Conte’s side are following the Tottenham player as they have been monitoring him in recent months.
Vertonghen has been a key figure for Mauricio Pochettino, but considering his age, it may be less likely that Tottenham will try to retain him beyond this campaign.
