Gianluca Zambrotta played more than 200 times for Juventus, as well as having spells with Como, Bari, Barcelona and AC Milan.

He won Serie A twice, and picked up various other domestic trophies. What really cements his legend status though, is winning the 2006 World Cup with Italy, getting in the team of the tournament and both the UEFA and FIFA select XI’s of that year.

Juventus currently find themselves fifth in Serie A, which really won’t do. They recently nudged Thiago Motta out of the exit door and brought in Igor Tudor to replace him. There’s now hope a summer of signings can solve everything… and that means more Sandro Tonali links.

The Newcastle United player has been linked with a return to Italy since shortly after arriving in England, with there a general Italian feeling that he surely can’t be truly happy… because he’s not in Italy!

Zambrotta has been speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport about what Juventus need to do, and was asked if the club should try a ‘transfer madness’ for the Newcastle United midfielder.

To that, the former defender said: “Yes, because he is an important midfielder and he is also proving it in the Premier League. I agree on the need to strengthen the Italian core: it is a component that in the long run improves both the club and the national team.”

Even if Juventus went crazy with a transfer fee, there’s still no guarantee Newcastle United would agree to sell, or even that Sandro Tonali would push for a move.
