Didi Hamann believes that Newcastle United could go as far as the Champions League semi-finals following their 4-1 win over Paris Saint Germain.
Hamann has been speaking to Sky Sports Germany, relayed by their Austrian outlet, following the big win at St James Park on Wednesday evening.
Newcastle ran out comfortable winners over the French giants last night in their first Champions League home game in 20 years.
It was a special evening that lived up to the hype as Newcastle dominated throughout, barely giving PSG a chance despite the away side dominating possession.
Instead, goals from Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and then a stunner from Fabian Schar saw the home side romp to victory and very much announce themselves on the biggest stage.
After picking up a point away to AC Milan it means Newcastle are very much on their way to the knockout stages, something which would be an impressive achievement given many had predicted they would struggle in arguably the toughest group in the competition.
Hamann, who spent a year in the North East following a move from Bayern Munich in 1998, believes they could go much farther than expected, though.
“They’ll be talking about this game for years and decades,” he said.
“We’ve seen what a good team they are once they get going. I’ve said it before with this team, it’s about cohesion.
“It’s just a wonderful mix with excellent individual players. Now they’re playing against Dortmund and if they win it looks very good. I believe that this team is one or two of the big teams in the competition.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up in the quarter or semi-finals because they really have tremendous cohesion. There is also euphoria around the club because they haven’t had this for a long time. The club can generate a special momentum.”
