Fluminense are now sounding a lot more confident that Chelsea defender Thiago Silva will become a free agent in the summer.
Club president Mario Bittencourt is today quoted by Globo Esporte talking about the situation. He confirms that they’ll try to sign the centre-back in case he doesn’t renew his contract with the Blues.
“I’m very good friends with Thiago, I talk to him about a lot of things and not just about coming to Fluminense. We don’t have anything at the moment, but we’re very keen for him to come home,” said Mario Bittencourt.
“From what we’ve heard, his contract with Chelsea runs out in the middle of the year and he won’t renew it. I think that, in Brazil, he wants to play for Fluminense. As soon as he’s cleared at Chelsea, we’ll get back to him. And he’ll help us in this important year.”
Only recently, director Fred Guedes also claimed that the club are in constant contact with Thiago Silva, always monitoring his situation at Chelsea to see if the signing will be possible.
The defender is a Fluminense fan and many times made it clear he’d like to end his career there. Since he’s turning 40 in September, it may be the right time.
Thiago Silva joined Chelsea in a free move from Paris Saint Germain in 2020, and has 146 appearances for the Blues already. Last year, he could’ve already become a free agent, but chose to sign a one-year extension with the Blues. It remains to be seen whether the club will at least try to keep him for another season.
