Wolverhampton Wanderers considered signing Sporting’s Hidemasa Morita in the winter market.
That’s according to Wednesday’s edition of A Bola, and their title says Wolves ‘wanted’ the midfielder.
The newspaper gives a peak into the movements from behind the scenes at Sporting. This includes Wolves’ interest in the 29-year-old and why they weren’t able to secure his services.
Morita joined from Santa Clara in July 2022 and has been a regular at Sporting.
Wolves made an approach for the Japan international in January, and the report explains they weren’t willing to pay more than €10m for a player who will turn 30 years of age in May.
His contract lasts until 2026, and the outlet says the Primeira Liga club’s desire is to offer him an extension.
A Bola state Vítor Pereira’s side knew about Sporting wanting to renew Morita’s contract and therefore didn’t advance with this operation, after making an initial approach.
For now, Sporting have put the Japanese’s renewal on the back-burner. If they fail to secure his long-term future before the end of this season, Wolves may return for him in the summer, when he’ll have a year left on his contract.
It feels like Wolves decided to back away because they weren’t willing to pay over €10m.
