Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha has told Globo Esporte that he held talks with Sport Recife’s Pedro Lima ahead of his impending move to Chelsea.
Over the past few weeks, the Brazilian media have talked about the Blues’ interest in the 17-year-old, and Globo now say the deal has been agreed for him to join Chelsea.
Cunha and Lima were both born in Paraíba, and the Wolves player has backed the right-back to have a bright future ahead.
“I always think that I have been following football here, and Pedro Lima is a talent, he has a bright future. He’s from Paraíba and comes to Recife, as happened to me, and has a very similar story. I wish him the best,” he said.
Cunha says he would have loved to play alongside Lima at Molineux. He also revealed that this could have been possible after Gary O’Neil’s side showed interest in the defender.
“I wanted him to be playing with me because I think Wolves were also interested. But well, he made his decision, Chelsea are a great club and I hope he plays and I hope to face him often,” Cunha explained.
“And we can talk a little on the field, try to change the shirt, but of course, wishing him all the best, who is a boy who deserves it, who fought for it and thank God it started. May it be a bright future for him, I’ll be rooting for him.”
Cunha is unlikely to come up against Lima at least during the next season. That’s because L’Equipe reported two days ago that Chelsea plan to send him out on loan to Strasbourg.
With Lima set to join Chelsea, Globo directly asked the Wolves midfielder what advice he would give him.
Responding to that, he said: “He has [to have] a lot of patience to enjoy the process, that it continues like this so that he gets there and achieves things because one thing is here, another is there, another level.
“And humility to recognise the moments of doubt, difficulties, which when you leave here are great. And may he have a lot of patience to reach the highest level.”
