Towards the end of last summer window, Wolverhampton Wanderers made an attempt to sign Boulaye Dia and even made an offer, which was turned down by Salernitana.

The striker was keen on joining Wolves and wasn’t pleased when the Serie A side refused to sanction a move.

Dia and Salernitana have struggled this season, as he managed only four goals from 18 games, and the club will be relegated from the top flight.

Tutto Salernitana take a look at their poor season, and provide a background on what happened when Wolves made an offer last summer.

Gary O’Neil’s side wanted him on loan with a €18m purchase option, and Dia tried putting pressure on Salernitana, directly and through his agent. The deal didn’t go through since the Italian club weren’t pleased with the fee and the formula.

It’s now claimed Salernitana president Danilo Iervolino was inclined to accept Wolves’ offer, in order to not have an unhappy player at the club. It was Morgan De Sanctis, their then sporting director, who refused to let him leave.

The report says De Sanctis found Wolves’ method and fee offered to be ‘disrespectful’ and convinced Iervolino to reject their offer.

This clearly didn’t work out for Dia and his current club, and the frontman’s case became one of the biggest problems of the season for Salernitana. In fact, the report now states it was a serious mistake to block Wolves.

At the same time, it’s said that considering the manner in which Wolves and Dia’s agent acted, it would have been ‘assessed as a sign of weakness’ had Salernitana sanctioned the transfer.

Either way, they’re relegated.
