Wolves had an eventful January transfer window.

They made three signings, with Marshall Munetsi arriving late in the window.

There was a possibility that Wolves could have had a fourth signing and their failure made an arrival easier for Aston Villa.

ABC Sevilla report the player in question was Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso and Wolves had come forward to sign the midfielder.

The outlet states that Vitor Pereira’s side were in talks for the USA international. The move didn’t go through because Wolves ‘could not reach the amounts’ requested by Real Betis.

There is no clear mention of how much Betis demanded for the 23-year-old.

At that point, the Spanish club’s interest in Marco Asensio rose and the move would have only happened if Cardoso joined Wolves.

Since that did not go through, it was Aston Villa who were handed a clear pathway to sign the winger.

The only way Betis could have financed even a loan for Asensio, who it was was thought fancied a return to Spain, was though Cardoso’s sale.

Wolves not being able to pay for Cardoso then killed Betis’ Asensio hopes and made his move to Aston Villa easier.
