Unai Emery has insisted his plan for Aston Villa involves “winning a title or two”, with Champions League football the “ultimate goal”.
The Spanish coach has been in charge of Aston Villa since the end of October, arriving to replace Steven Gerrard following a poor start to the season.
He’s been a huge hit at Villa Park since, quickly turning the ship around and leading them up the Premier League table and away from relegation trouble.
He has currently picked up 16 points from his eight Premier League games in charge, enjoying a 2 points per game record in the league and picking up big wins against the likes of Manchester United.
The Villans are very much looking up with him in charge, with the hope from the club’s management and fans that he can turn them into a side who regularly feature in Europe in the coming years.
That is certainly something he is capable of, having done so at Sevilla and Villarreal in previous jobs, leading the former to several European titles and the latter to the first in their history.
Both also ended up as regulars in the Champions League under his leadership, something Emery himself admits is the aim for this Aston Villa side.
“First, what I am able to do again in the Premiership. If I am able to build a path at a historic club like Aston Villa,” he told DAZN.
“The project I have here right now in my hands is a project that logically is not going to be done from one day to the next, nor from one month to the next, nor from one year to the next. It may need a little more time, but it is clearly with the idea of getting there”.
“What is it to get there? Trying to get to the European places with the ultimate aim of playing in the Champions League and also with the aim of winning a title or two.
“It is true that Aston Villa are not at their best at the moment, but they have the tools and the coach to put pressure on the Premiership’s big boys.
“Logically, today’s picture of Aston Villa is the one we want to gradually progress so that in two years’ time we will have a different picture.”
