Arsenal and Chelsea may have been handed encouragement in their pursuit of Sporting Club de Portugal star Viktor Gyökeres, with it claimed only they could afford him.

O Jogo cover comments from former midfielder Fredrik Soderstrom on the striker as he continues to wrack up the goals and earn himself admirers around Europe.

Gyökeres has been shining in Portugal this season since moving from Coventry City in a €21m deal in the summer.

He had been the star of the show for the Championship side and has continued on that footing with Sporting, scoring 38 goals and registering 16 assists in 45 games in all competitions to date.

Two of those goals came last night in a victory over Vitória Guimarães.

He’s undoubtedly been a superb signing and appears set to be the subject of firm interest from around Europe thanks to the numbers he’s posting.

The Premier League is certainly keeping an eye on him and both Arsenal and Chelsea have been credited with interest in recent months.

Indeed, that has continued to be the case this month, with various reports insisting the pair are interested in him as they seek a high level forward for their squad this summer.

Soderstrom believes a move may be possible too as Arsenal, Chelsea and other Premier League suitors are likely the only ones who can afford him from Sporting anyway.

“I’ve known him since he was 14, he was strong, powerful and worked hard,” he said.

“He’s improved his technique and his finishing in recent years. He’d already scored a lot of goals in the Championship, at Coventry, but everyone was surprised by his impact in Portugal. He came in on the right foot, full of energy and he kept scoring goals.

“Everyone wants a player who scores goals like that. Sporting are asking a very high price and I think only the English can afford him. He did a good job in the Championship, but the Premier League is something else. We will see.”
