Tottenham Hotspur’s attempts to sign Luis Díaz in January convinced Liverpool to step up their efforts to secure the forward’s services from FC Porto.

The Colombia international enjoyed a good start to his Anfield career and has managed two goals from six league games. He’s also won the EFL Cup with the Merseyside club, beating Chelsea in the final at Wembley last month.

After shining for the Portuguese club in the first half of the season, the 25-year-old has extended his good run with Jürgen Klopp’s side. That helped him earn a call up from Reinaldo Rueda for the World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Venezuela in March.

The Reds attacker scored and registered an assist in Colombia’s 3-0 win over Bolivia and also played the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 victory against Venezuela. Despite these results, Colombia failed to make it to the Qatar World Cup.

Díaz took to Twitter to send a message after failing to qualify for the FIFA tournament.

“Since I was little, I dreamed of wearing this shirt and wearing it proudly in a World Cup,” he said.

“It hurts too much not to have achieved it. I keep wanting to fight for this dream, on my part you will have my commitment and know that I will leave everything to achieve that goal. We will have revenge.”
