Even though the Portuguese press is still to make big noise out of the links between Aston Villa and Sporting boss Ruben Amorim, the first comments about it show an optimistic scenario on this move.
On Twitter, CNN Portugal journalist Bruno Andrade points out that despite the many rumours about the manager’s future over the past few months, this is the first time a switch of clubs actually ‘makes sense’.
It’s recalled that Amorim was recently linked to the likes of Paris Saint Germain, RB Leipzig, Chelsea, Leicester City, Leeds United and others. Now with the recent news on Aston Villa’s interest, the ‘whole scenario’ seems more plausible ‘for a a breakthrough’.
Bruno Andrade stated: ‘Ruben Amorim has already been placed in the last few months on the route of PSG, RB Leipzig, Chelsea, Leicester, Leeds, among others. Now it’s Aston Villa’s turn. Honestly, it’s the first time the whole scenario (situation of everyone involved) makes sense for a breakthrough in the story.’
The picture is indeed different because, despite being secure at Sporting for many years, with credit for the league title in 2021, the manager isn’t that secure in the job any longer. The Lions are currently 5th in the league table and there’s big pressure being piled on, although most relate the struggles to selling players in the summer.
Aston Villa sacked Steven Gerrard on Thursday evening, who’d been in charge of the club for nearly a year. He held a record of 13 wins, eight draws and 19 defeats in 40 games.
