Anderlecht midfielder Josh Cullen has admitted it was a difficult choice for him to leave West Ham United this summer.
The 24-year-old made the move to Belgium this summer in a £450,000 transfer and has established himself as a regular since, featuring in all but one of their league games since his arrival.
His move to the club brought an end to a long association with West Ham, who he originally joined as a youngster before moving through the youth ranks, eventually landing in the first team in 2015.
Establishing himself as a first-team player for the Hammers proved to be a difficult task, though, with him instead spending the last five years on various loan deals.
Indeed, he managed just ten appearances for West Ham’s senior side in total, meaning few would be surprised if he wasn’t all that disappointed to be leaving.
Cullen insists it wasn’t like that, though, admitting it wasn’t easy for him to decide to move on in search of regular football.
“Choosing to leave West Ham for good a few weeks wasn’t easy, but it had to be done at the age of 24,” he told DHNet.
“I’ve spent 15 years of my life there, and there’s bound to be a bit of sadness when I leave.
“Why didn’t I breakthrough there? Frankly, I don’t know. You’d have to ask the different managers.”
