West Ham United striker Gianluca Scamacca should resist a return to Italy and instead fight to prove himself at the London Stadium.
That’s the opinion of Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali, who has urged his former striker to rethink his plans as a move to Roma seemingly gets closer.
Scamacca has been linked with a move back to Italy throughout this summer after a disappointing first year in England after a move to West Ham last summer.
Roma have been chasing him throughout as they look for a replacement for Tammy Abraham, who is set to miss most of this campaign with an injury picked up at the end of last season.
They’ve been working on a deal for weeks, trying to convince West Ham to sanction a loan move and abandon their efforts to recoup some of the money they paid a year ago.
That seems to have worked and a report earlier today indicated a deal may now be in place as director of football Tiago Pinto is set to fly out to London to finalise matters.
That would see Scamacca make a quick return to Italy, where he previously shined with Sassuolo, but Carnevali does not believe that is the right choice for him to make.
“He can be an excellent signing for an important club, he has great qualities and still considerable growth margins,” he told the Calcio Totale broadcast on Rai 2, relayed by Bianconera News.
“If I were at Inter, Roma or Juve, I would absolutely take him. But if I were him, I would stay in the Premier and I would not go to one of these clubs.
“He only stayed there for a year, he had an injury that conditioned him, as soon as he arrived, he didn’t know the league, the language and the world of England.
“He would do well to play his cards in the Premier and not have want to go back to Italy, especially to his home in Rome. Certain challenges must be faced without being satisfied. He would like to go home but I don’t know if this thing will do him any good.”
