Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and Brentford’s Mark Flekken are not good enough for the Netherlands, with both now in the limelight again following an injury to Justin Bijlow.
That’s according to analyst Johan Derksen, who is not convinced by either goalkeeper as the starting option to replace Bijlow.
Verbruggen and Flekken both moved to the Premier League this summer, with Brighton paying big to make Verbruggen their new number one and Brentford bringing in Flekken as a replacement for David Raya.
The pair have had something of an indifferent time in England since their arrival, with neither yet to fully convince despite impressive performances here and there.
Because of that neither player is yet to be given the starting role for the Netherlands by manager Ronald Koeman, who has flip flopped between the pair over the last few international breaks.
He seems unconvinced that either are the ideal replacement for his preferred number one Bijlow and Derksen shares that opinion, criticising the Brighton and Brentford goalkeepers in his latest comments on the matter.
“It does suck,” Derksen in relation to Bijlow’s latest injury.
“He really is a man made of glass. He has only played a hundred games for Feyenoord, while he has been there his whole career.
“I follow English football, that’s the only thing I still follow very closely. Well, those Flekken and Verbruggen don’t make a convincing impression at all, they are weak brothers.
“Both of them. And Koeman thinks they are potential Dutch national team goalkeepers.”
