Tottenham Hotspur initially signed Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig in January 2024.  Last summer, Spurs extended his loan stay until the end of this season and also secured a purchase option.

The forward has scored a goal and registered three assists from 27 games this season. At the start of this year, we covered claims from Germany that Tottenham don’t want to exercise the €12m purchase clause.

On February 20th, Bild backed it up and stated Ange Postecoglou isn’t keen on retaining the 29-year-old.

Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schäfer has discussed the Germany international’s future and RB Live have relayed his comments.

Schäfer believes the north London club won’t exercise the clause to buy Werner in the summer.

“Timo Werner is currently at Tottenham. We spoke with his agent two or three weeks ago. I think the loan isn’t going quite as well as we might hope,” he said.

“[Schäfer wants to] think about Timo Werner and all the players who are returning in the summer in due course.”

The Bundesliga club parted ways with Marco Rose and appointed Zsolt Löw as their interim manager. Rose overlooked the former Chelsea man at Leipzig and that convinced him to join Tottenham on loan.

In the summer, Werner is expected to return to his parent club, where he has a contract until 2026. With Rose’s exit, he may get an opportunity at Leipzig.

If Tottenham were to not make Werner’s stay permanent, he is unlikely to have a career at the German club.

“We want to have a team on the pitch starting this summer that corresponds to what I’ve already answered several times,” Schäfer explained.

“We need a breath of fresh air, a new spirit, to recapture that attitude, that life, brutal energy that has distinguished this club.”
