With seven centre-backs already on the books, do Watford really need to buy someone new for the position this summer?
Maybe there are plans to offload a few of them, as Le10 Sport in France are reporting the Hornets are interested in signing Mouctar Diakhaby from Lyon in France.
The 21-year-old didn’t get that much game time last season, with Bruno Génésio preferring a Jeremy Morel-Marcelo partnership throughout their 2017-18 campaign, and that has led to rumours of an exit.
Valencia were previously linked with the young defender, and were reportedly willing to spend €15m, but Lyon deemed that less than adequate and turned it down.
Watford are said to be ‘preparing an offensive’ to try and sign Diakhaby, who is himself said to be open to a move away from Lyon should the right opportunity arise.
However, it’s worth pointing out that Morel is currently 34, and, at some point, someone will have to step in to take his spot.
Looking at Lyon’s squad, that will probably fall on Diakhaby, as Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa featured for just 217 minutes compared to the 21-year-old’s 1490.
