Up until the 2-1 loss to Chelsea at the weekend, Christian Kabasele had a rather interesting record in the Premier League this season.
Every time he had started, Watford had picked up a point, but every time he had been left on the bench, they had lost.
That changed against Frank Lampard’s men, but the Belgian has shown he can provide much needed help at the back for Quique Sánchez Flores, and that’s why the Premier League side are looking to keep him around.
At least, that’s what the player has said once again, telling RTBF contract discussions are still underway, which they have been for quite some time.
He said: “Since last year, we’ve been in talks to renew. The objective is to stay as long as possible at Watford and in the Premier League. It’s so difficult to set foot [in the PL], so it’s hard to want to change”.
If he wants to accomplish that, however, he’ll have to ensure his side don’t get relegated down to the Championship, which they are comfortably on course to do after 11 games, sitting rock bottom with five points, six behind 17th placed Everton.
Kabasele is a positive guy, though, and he’s even thinking about playing well enough to earn himself a spot in Roberto Martinez’s squad for the 2020 Euros.
He said: “It’s an objective for anyone who can be picked. Everyone dreams of playing in a tournament and it can be the consecration of this golden generation. I’m working towards that and to prove my value to the manager”.
