When the Spanish media link Glen Johnson with a move from Stoke City to Barcelona, they do so in all seriousness, there’s no comedy element.
With all due respect to Stoke, the Spanish media taking the links seriously, and continuing to push them, is probably because they don’t watch the club and assume Johnson is at the same level of years gone by.
Spain’s AS on Monday bring up the possibility, putting forward Johnson as one of several possibilities for Barcelona in the January transfer window. The club need an extra right back and can’t decide whether to go for old and cheap or young and full of potential.
The problem with Johnson moving to Barcelona, or one of the problems with Johnson moving to Barcelona, is that he likely wouldn’t be cheap.
Even in the scenario that Stoke would allow a January free transfer, Johnson probably earns more than Barcelona are looking to pay.
If the Englishman was prepared to take a big cut, that may change things, and this bizarre transfer rumour refuses to die.
