Watford were relegated from the Premier League last season and Ignacio Pussetto was not keen on playing in the lower division with the English club.
Last summer, the Hornets let the forward join Sampdoria on a loan deal with an option to buy.
The Watford owned player has found it hard to enjoy regular game time with the Serie A side as he managed to clock in less than 200 minutes from six matches until October. This includes one start in the league and another in the cup competition.
Pussetto has failed to score a goal or register an assist and has been sidelined with a knee injury since the start of November. He tried various treatments but wasn’t able to obtain a positive result and this convinced the Argentine to go under the knife.
Club Doria 46 state the Watford man has been all but ‘useless’ and ‘didn’t live up to the expectations’ when he was fit.
After undergoing the surgery, he is set to spend a spell on the sidelines, and the report adds the 27-year-old’s ‘season is already over’.
Pussetto’s failure to impress at the Italian club means he will return to Watford at the end of this season.
