Aston Villa’s loss to Everton in the Carabao Cup was a ‘major blow’ to manager Unai Emery and his plans to win silverware this season.

That’s according to AS, who cover the 2-1 defeat and say Emery will be taking it hard after targeting trophies with the Villans.

The newspaper states that when the Spanish coach arrived at Aston Villa last season he had to goals in mind, first to reverse the poor results suffered under Steven Gerrard and the second to ‘lift trophies’.

He’s very much achieved the first one but the second is yet to happen and that’s why the defeat to Everton will come as a ‘major blow’.

The Carabao Cup presented Aston Villa with a good opportunity to get their first silverware under Emery, but they’ve now lost of the three options by losing to the Toffees.

That’s disappointing for the coach, who has the ‘aspiration’ of winning trophies with his current club and ‘wants to leave his mark’ in Birmingham.

Coupled with a disappointing start to the Europa Conference League and things are looking slightly negative on the cup front.

Fortunately for Emery he still has the support of Aston Villa’s sporting management and especially the fans, who are very much behind him despite this disappointment.

The Spanish coach now needs to ‘remove the result’ from the locker room, something AS are confident he can do as he is a ‘specialist’ in reversing situations such as the one he currently finds himself in.
