Nélson Semedo ended contract negotiations with Barcelona in March because Jorge Mendes was convinced the right-back would have better offers from elsewhere.
Manchester City are one of the clubs interested in the Portugal international, according to some claims, and earlier reports explained the Citizens are ready to offer João Cancelo as part of the deal.
Pep Guardiola’s side are also believed to be interested in Sergi Roberto.
Mundo Deportivo journalist Miguel Rico now claims Semedo is set to sign a new contract and gives a background on why potential suitors didn’t make an approach for him.
He explains Mendes’ initiative was to work an exchange operation, involving Semedo and the former Juventus man, who it’s claimed doesn’t have a good relationship with Guardiola.
The ‘unsolvable problem’ appeared when City director of football Txiki Begiristain ‘ruled out’ signing Semedo and didn’t want to talk about Cancelo or any other player leaving the Etihad. He has also ruled out a transfer operation for Roberto.
Mundo’s report only suggest Begiristain has ‘ruled out’ signing the two targets (Semedo and Roberto) while City are still in the race to win the Champions League.
Rico doesn’t provide an explanation whether or not the City’s chief would change his stance on the two players after the completion of the European competition.
