St. Gallen forward Willem Geubbels finds himself in the middle of a battle between his father and the club’s sporting director as Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers line up for his signature.
That’s according to L’Equipe, who report that the highly sought-after striker may need to battle his way out of the Swiss club.
The newspaper explains that after another successful season in Switzerland with 17 goals and 41 matches, Geubbels is highly sought after. Leeds and Wolves are two of the sides to have shown an interest in him already this summer.
They’re just two of a growing list of clubs in Germany and England that could make a move for him. The problem is that St. Gallen aren’t ready to part with the 23-year-old just yet.
They’ve made their stance clear, with Roger Stilz, the sporting director, commenting on the matter.
“The club is counting on Willem in the future, an important player who still has two years left on his contract,” he said about a potential exit.
That’s a direct opposite to his father’s words on the matter, with him making it clear they think that they’ve completed the project they signed up for when he joined from Monaco in January 2023.
He also acts as his son’s agent, and it appears he intends to open talks about a move away this summer.
“We had a project with St. Gallen and after two and a half years, I think the contract is fulfilled,” he said.
“Should he leave this summer or next year? We will discuss it respectfully and in the best interests of all parties involved if a change should occur.”
It could make life difficult for Leeds, Wolves and the other suitors with his father needing to work out a solution with St. Gallen before a deal is likely to happen.
Sheffield United and Southampton are also keen but don’t have the same finances as the Premier League pair.
