Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has sarcastically responded to Cologne manager Steffen Baumgart after he brought up the decision to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.
That’s according to BILD, who cover comments from Tuchel after Koln manager Baumgart recently commented that the German champions should have signed striker Victor Boniface.
Boniface has proven to be something of a revelation since arriving in the Bundesliga in the summer with Bayer Leverkusen.
He joined in a €20.5m deal from Union SG in Belgium and has hit the ground running, bagging four goals and two assists in three games in the Bundesliga so far.
That has him sitting at the top of the goalscoring charts and earning rave reviews in the process, particularly from Baumgart.
He recently questioned whether Bayern would have been wiser spending the money to sign Boniface as their new striker rather than the €100m it took to get Kane from Tottenham. Tuchel, though, is having none of that.
“If we had known that earlier, we could have expanded it (the transfer committee) to nine people – I don’t know whether that would have been effective. In Harry we have exactly the player and personality we need. We are now trying to get him even more involved in the game. We have the perfect center forward.
“Of course, we also know Boniface, his strengths, his power, his physicality. He is a perfect fit for Leverkusen at the moment.”
Those comments have led to an in-depth analysis of the matter by Kicker, who have compared the former Tottenham star with Boniface and explained why it is nonsense to do so.
They basically say that the two are completely different players with different strengths and weaknesses, with Kane more of a target player and Boniface an active forward. They are, ‘two strikers with two different profiles’.
It now remains to be seen who comes out on top this evening when Bayern take on Leverkusen, and then across the season from there on out.
