Earlier on Tuesday, Manchester City announced João Cancelo has completed a loan move to Bayern Munich until the end of this season.
After the news broke out the defender was moving to Germany, reports in the UK said he has had a fall out with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The 28-year-old has addressed this topic while speaking to the reporters in Munich.
“There was a lot of speculation about my relationship with Pep Guardiola. But the truth is that I just wanted to get more playing minutes. And I see that opportunity at Bayern,” he said, relayed by Sky Deutschland.
The former Juventus man has made five appearances for Manchester City after the World Cup and two of them came in cup competitions. His last outing for the Premier League winners came in their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on January 14th.
Guardiola spent three seasons between 2013 and 2016 at Bayern, but Cancelo didn’t speak with the Manchester City boss before moving to the Bavarian club.
“I didn’t ask Pep Guardiola about Bayern Munich, everything happened too quickly for that. I feel ready to start straight away. I’d like to put on the Bayern shirt and get going as soon as possible,” the player said.
Multiple claims on Monday stated the Bundesliga winners retain an option to make his stay permanent in the summer. This was not mentioned in the official statements released by the Citizens and the Bavarian club.
The Portugal international was asked about his plans for the future after this season.
“First of all, we have to see what these five months in Munich bring. First of all, I want to focus on my goals and those of the club. Then we’ll sit down and see what’s next,” he added.
“I’ve had a great time at Manchester City… I’m still under contract with City.”
