While everyone is currently focused on working out why Arsenal have paid so much for Aaron Ramsdale, they’re not really asking what on earth happened with Andre Onana.

The Ajax goalkeeper was seemingly one step away from a move to Arsenal this summer, with it stated at one point they were in pole position for him.

Things never seemed to advance beyond that point, with Onana instead linked with moves all around Europe but never getting one over the line.

He’s now expected to stay at Ajax, despite the fact his contract expires next summer, a turn of events that did not look at all possible just over a month ago.

Quite why the move to Arsenal didn’t happen hasn’t been explained, but NOS have some information on the situation in a piece today.

They say Onana ‘seemed to be on his way out’, and ‘a transfer to Arsenal was very close’ at one point in the summer.

The goalkeeper spoke to the Gunners ‘several times’, but nothing ever came of it, with similar negotiations with Lyon also having ‘fallen through.’.

Now he’s likely to remain at Ajax until the end of his contract, with no more offers or anything going on around him at this moment in time.

Arsenal certainly seem to have turned their back on him after signing Ramsdale, while the rest of Europe aren’t as keen either.

So much so that it’s more likely he’ll serve out his contract and leave on a free transfer next summer, a situation that doesn’t really suit either party.
