It was inevitable. After Spanish newspaper Marca said Tottenham and Liverpool are interested in 23 year old Lucas Alario at the weekend, the story was always going to grow.
That said, that ‘Lucas Alario to Tottenham Hotspur’ is already so big in the Argentine press is a little surprising.
It’s probably because of a report from The Sun, which misrepresented Marca: ‘And Marca claim Mauricio Pochettino is plotting a swoop in 2017 to bolster his attacking options.’’
A mention of interest had quickly turned into ‘plotting a swoop’, and Liverpool were dropped from the equation. That in turn made it a story about Mauricio Pochettino chasing a fellow Argentine, and therefore all the more attractive for press in the country.
Lucas Alario also had a run-in with his River Plate manager over the weekend, annoyed that he’d been taken off after another player received a red card. It’s all combined to boost the claims.
Argentina’s TyC Sports, pretty big in the country, go with the headline: ‘River: Tottenham comes for Alario’.
Argentine newspaper El Pais have an almost identical headline, Ole say Tottenham aren’t the only club with him in mind, and many other media outlets have also picked the story up.
It’s now changed into ‘claims from the British media’ that Pochettino is set to try and sign Lucas Alario in January, but that all comes from Marca’s article just saying they and Liverpool are interested.
He’ll be a done deal by the end of the week.
