At the end of the summer transfer window, Germany’s SportBild reported a late Wolfsburg attempt to sign Heung-Min Son from Tottenham Hotspur.
Wolfsburg had been ready to pay €32m to sign the South Korean from Spurs, but were told that if they wanted to do a deal it would have to be at €40m. That worked out at the time to be £35m.
Wolfsburg’s interest in signing Son is an open secret in Germany, with an attempt expected in January. The German club’s sporting director Klas Allofs was quoted as saying: “He is a very interesting player for us.”
Son’s performance at the weekend for Tottenham against Stoke City will only see the player’s value rise. Not only did he put in a really shift, getting into Gazzetta dello Sport’s European Team of the Week, but it also showed he’s very much part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans.
The Tottenham manager said after the match that he was pleased to have kept Son at Tottenham, and the whole situation is looking bleak for Wolfsburg.
If the asking price was £35m in August, then it’s likely to be £40m+ if Wolfsburg return in January. Son’s marketability makes him more valuable, and great performances on the pitch adds to that.
