Tottenham ‘tried in every way’ to convince Fikayo Tomori to join from AC Milan but were unable to talk him into a return to London.
That’s according to Tuttomercatoweb, who provide a background on Kevin Danso’s arrival at Tottenham and how that was linked to Tomori’s refusal.
They explain that there was a moment at the end of last week in which Danso was virtually a Juventus player. The Italian side had closed an agreement with Lens on Thursday for the Austrian to join on loan until the end of the season.
This was accepted and a deal was looking likely as Danso had shown a reluctance to join the likes of Wolves, Rennes and Wolfsburg.
However, the transfer window spun things around, and Tottenham arrived to scupper their plans. They had spent January trying to find a new defender and spent several days trying to convince Tomori to move from AC Milan.
They reached an agreement with the Italian side and then ‘tried in every way’ to convince the defender to make the move. They were unsuccessful on this front, though, with Tomori happy in Milan and because of his association with Chelsea.
It was at this point Tottenham pivoted and focused on Danso. They offered Lens a loan deal with an obligation to buy set at €25m. The French side accepted and pushed for the defender to go to Spurs instead of Juventus.
Danso then accepted, flew to England to complete the move and left Juventus to pivot themselves to sign Lloyd Kelly from Newcastle United instead.
It was a deadline day rush for everyone, all caused by Tomori refusing to move to Tottenham, who did their best to convince him of the move but ultimately failed.
