This weekend, reports from the English media claimed that Tottenham Hotspur will be watching Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte in his upcoming games at the World Cup.
This is something that had already been reported by the Portuguese press a couple of weeks ago, with newspaper A Bola claiming Spurs were interested in the player.
Now with these new reports, the Lisbon media returns to speaking about it. And a couple of outlets come up to say it won’t be easy for Tottenham to sign Ugarte.
Newspaper Correio da Manhã covers the news and says that with the player protected by a €60m release clause, Sporting would only accept negotiating his sale for over €40m.
The Lions’ resistance for his departure is also reported by Jornal de Notícias. They claim the Portuguese club are trying to renew Ugarte’s contract, and an offer with a pay raise is already on the table.
Sporting want to increase his release clause from €60m to €80m, and actually want to keep the player ‘at least’ until the end of this season. So Tottenham’s offer to get him in January would need to be quite convincing.
