There are a couple of reasons why Tottenham Hotspur fans should keep an eye on Marcus Edwards’ current form at Sporting.
With Lions’ manager Ruben Amorim this week claiming the winger deserves to be in the English team, newspaper O Jogo today features an interesting piece on his situation.
First of all, the outlet explains that Edwards is being followed by several European clubs, and when using an example, they take Tottenham’s interest.
It’s recalled that Spurs ‘recently’ made contact to sign the winger, and saw Sporting president Frederico Varandas closing the doors to a transfer.
Now what we shouldn’t forget is that Tottenham still get 35% of any move that Edwards makes in the future. That’s because of the agreement made when he left the North London side in 2019.
At the time, he moved from Spurs to Vitória Guimarães for free, with the English side keeping 50% of a future transfer. When Sporting bought him in 2022, the Premier League club didn’t want money, and chose to keep their percentage.
When Tottenham bought Pedro Porro from the Lions, the Lisbon side asked for 15% more of Edward’s rights, so Spurs were left with 35%.
That means that their interest in bringing the winger back to London isn’t the only reason why they should be attentive to his recent success at Sporting.
Newspaper Record today writes that he’s being closely watched by the FA, and could soon be in the national team, and that should only increase the chances of a move to the Premier League.
