If there’s one thing footballers hate the most, it’s losing, and when one of your teammates has won a World Cup and won’t stop talking about it, it must be quite difficult.
That appears to be what has happened at Tottenham following the tournament in Qatar, where Cristian Romero was part of the Argentina squad that lifted the trophy.
He was key in the final, perhaps a bit too involved if you were to ask Hugo Lloris, and there’s no denying his importance to the Argentina national team’s achievement.
The defender then returned to Tottenham, where he has gone back into Antonio Conte’s and Cristian Stellini’s squads, but he clearly did so all the while talking a lot about his success.
Few will blame him, as it’s likely a once in a lifetime moment for him, but the player, in an interview with TyC Sports, admitted he’s had to tone it down a bit of late.
Asking the Tottenham centre-back about winning the trophy, he said: “Being a World Champions is the most important thing that happened to me as a footballer, but I have had to relax a little lately. I’ve put it to one side a bit because otherwise my Tottenham teammates get a little angry.
“It didn’t change my life, but it did mark me. It changed a lot of things in football. Surely, for the next few years, I’ll be calmer, without that pressure on the national team after having achieved everything.”
