Emerson Royal sealed a deadline day move to Tottenham Hotspur, just a month and a bit after having joined Barcelona.

The right-back arrived in Europe in 2019 and was co-owned by the La Liga side and Real Betis, before the Catalan club completed his transfer in June.

He made three appearances for Ronald Koeman’s side before the Spanish club decided to cash in on the 22-year-old by selling him to Spurs.

Marca have published an interview with the Brazilian, where he admitted Koeman didn’t say anything ‘special’ to him on his arrival at the Camp Nou, while he had a good relationship with Barcelona president Joan Laporta.

It was earlier stated the ex-Betis man would continue with the Blaugrana, but their delicate financial situation mean they had to cut ties with him. Although he was hurt with Barcelona’s decision to let him go, Emerson decided it’s best for him to join the north London club.

“I have the ambition to play. I know that I am a footballer with a contract and I could say that I stayed, but I am a person who wants to be happy,” he said.

“I do not want to stay in a club that I love, but sad. I knew his thought was not for me to stay, but for me to get out. So, I decided to go. I told myself that I was not going to stay here sad.”

When Marca quizzed how his family reacted to Barcelona’s decision to sell him, the Spurs summer signing said: “They were stunned, as I was when they told me. We had been in Barcelona for a short time, barely 40 days and we were still putting things in their place.”

“I got home and told everyone the truth, what had happened to me and that my decision was to leave. Go to Tottenham and succeed all together. And they supported me.”

“Now I am happy because I am totally focused on Tottenham and with the idea of succeeding there. You have a project for me. They have given me the love I deserve and that is why I am going there with great enthusiasm.”
