On Thursday, Jean-Michel Aulas did what Jean-Michel Aulas does and trampled all over claims Tanguy Ndombele’s move to Tottenham is agreed.

The player wants the move, Lyon are open to a sale, and the midfielder has even visited Spurs’ training centre. The only thing missing from the deal is a transfer fee, and that’s a rather important aspect.

Speaking on French TV, the Lyon president said: “The first offer Tottenham made was €45m. We’ve held discussions since, but nothing is done. I can assure you of that, and we’re not in a hurry either. Nothing is done and he’s one of our best players. As for how much he’s worth, I don’t know, but he’s worth more than €45m.”

Aulas has been trying to build up an auction for Ndombele for several months, even publicly inviting clubs, including Ligue 1 rivals PSG, into the reckoning. However, it doesn’t appear to have worked.

PSG and Juventus are looking elsewhere, Real Madrid interest never really got off the ground, Atletico Madrid have signed Marcos Llorente, and right now Tottenham seem to be the only club in town.

That makes claims from L’Equipe at least a little eyebrow raising. The French newspaper say the transfer to Tottenham is ‘probable’, but then state ‘for an amount approaching €80m’.

It’s very unlikely Spurs are going to pay anything like that figure.
