Tottenham‘s Guglielmo Vicario joined Juventus on an initial loan deal late in the summer. Gianluigi Buffon has given him the backing to succeed in Turin.
This came after the Italian was pursued by a host of Serie A sides. Sport Witness had covered how Inter Milan initially agreed personal terms for his signing. They moved on, leading to Napoli being interested in his signature.
Soon, Juventus moved quickly, as they brought him in on a loan with an option to buy.
He has already featured in every Serie A game and backing has arrived from Guglielmo Vicario.
Belief Spurs mess wasn’t on him
Gianluigi Buffon spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport about Juve’s business in the summer. Special emphasis was placed on the Tottenham player, who comes in after a period of trouble in London.
Buffon revealed the piece of advice he has given to the 29-year-old about the transfer.
He said: “I only gave Guglielmo one piece of advice – enjoy the experience. Playing for Juventus is a privilege. Wherever you go, you sense the importance of the shirt.”
Buffon also spoke about Vicario’s time at Tottenham and if fans are underrating him because of that.
The Old Lady legend clarified he wasn’t responsible for the Spurs mess.
“No, but he’s judged by many people who don’t fully understand the goalkeeper’s role. Vicario was heavily criticised in his last year at Tottenham, but he’s coming off a formative experience; he was a key player and a winner in the Premier League.”
“Last season he paid the price, because when a team goes bad, 99.99% of the time, the goalkeeper also suffers.”
Player already making a mark
So far this season, Vicario has played all three league games for Juve. He did very well in the win over Parma, making a crucial save when things could have gone either way. Even against AC Milan, he made the right decisions all the time.
That is a sign that things are back on track for the Italy international.
As far as the Tottenham spell goes, things were going well for him when the club was in a stable situation. He had a very good campaign during Ange Postecoglou’s opening campaign. Just when larger issues emerged, he became the scapegoat, even if he did make errors.
Juve are in a stable position under Luciano Spalletti and his career is on the rise again.
